Peep is an advocacy campaign platform for the TGNC (Transgender and Gender Nonconforming) community offering accessible resources and tangible peer support in the neighborhood to promote smoke cessation by creating a safe and private platform.

Issue

Lack of Belonging

& Community Support

Hard to Reach Out, Harder to Be Reached

Support Exists—

But Inaccessible & Unsupportive

Privacy and Safety isn’t guaranteed

Carefully Interviewed and Resonated Among Interviewees

“When I see certain stickers or pins, I know I’m in good company. It’s like a quiet signal—no words needed.”

“I know California is better, but that doesn’t mean I always feel safe, feels OK walking into a clinic or asking for help. Safety is personal, not just legal.”

“Sometimes it feels like the policies are made about us, but not with us. I find out about resources and things way too late—everyone wants a better way of seeing these infos.”

I’d love to help others out! But Is the platform secure? I don’t want random people asking questions. If it was anonymous, I’d feel safer sharing.”

How might we create a safe place that’s always accessible for TGNC people to support one another, learn about the policy related to them, acknolwedge health related informations and be aware of their neighborhood ?

Behind the Scenes

Background Research

Research

“Violence against transgender people is 4 times as likely to cause hospitalization and the murder rate has been estimated at 17 times higher than victimization patterns of the general population.”

“2023 has been a harrowing year for transgender communities with an unprecedented amount of anti-trans legislation, violent rhetoric, and other attacks on our basic rights and dignity.”

39.4% or 118,300

of transgender youth live in the states that have passed bans on gender affirming care

Mapping Inequality

“The HOLC deployed examiners across the country to classify neighborhoods by their perceived level of lending risk. HOLC examiners consulted with local bank loan officers, city officials, appraisers, and realtors to create “Residential Security” maps of cities. More than 150 of these maps still exist.”

and Questions Developing

Final Questions

Do you oftenly feel unsafe in the public?

Do you rarely open up to ask for help?

Do you like this design? As a transgender, will you use our app?

Do you often read about policies happen on your people?

Do you feel unsecure enough that you often chat anonymously?

What policy do you want to make?

Do you want to be a policy maker?

Too straight forward is very impolite.

Not being thoughtful enough of the question, don’t ask simple yes or no questions

“Your” is separating, not friendly.

Very disrespectful way of asking, should be more friendly

The questions are too plain, not giving interviewee a good impression.

Do you feel that leaving an anonymous message attached to a tag makes you feel safe participating in this campaign?

In what ways does this platform’s design start a conversation about TGNC community?

Do you see promoting and giving information on related policy & petitions brining meaningful impacts?

If you were to use the platform, would you rather interact with others anonymously?

Imagine yourself is a policy maker, what is the first policy you want to make a change to your community? Why?

Problems We Encountered

“How might people know they could tap it, it does not have a clear indicator?”

“I like how you are showing the flag without actually putting it out there.”

Sticker Designs

"Cecilia Grugan, 29, a Deaf, trans and nonbinary person living in the D.C. area, prefers this sign, because it feels more inclusive. “It symbolizes that the acronym can continue. Wherever you fall on this spectrum, this sign will include you,” they said.

"Many Deaf queer people prefer to use the ASL alphabet to spell Q-U-E-E-R because they feel the other signs don’t fully represent them.”

Reflections

How might we control what’s being said in the chat, especially hate comments and inappropriate activities?

: Community Moderator

How might we prevent the creation of another exclusive system while encouraging TGNC people to remap their neighborhood?

How might we mitigate unintentional harm to local businesses?

: The map is constantly evolving

How might we prevent people outside the community from using the platform?
